What is the actual difference between an ERV and an HRV?
Both exchange stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air and recover heat on the way. Only the ERV also transfers moisture between the two streams. Everything else about them — ducting, filters, installation — is broadly the same.
How do I know which one my house needs?
Look at your windows in deep winter. Heavy condensation means excess indoor moisture and points to an HRV. A house that feels parched, with static and shrinking trim, points to an ERV. We will look at the house rather than guess from the outside.
Can an ERV replace my furnace humidifier?
Not really — they do different jobs. A humidifier adds moisture; an ERV reduces how much you lose. In a very dry house you may still want both, and we will tell you if one alone would do.
